Cast: Kamal Hassan, Pooja Kumar, Andrea Jeremiah, Shekhar Kapoor & Waheeda Rehman
Director: Kamal Hassan
What’s it about:
Vishwaroop 2 is a sequel to the 2013 film with the same name. Heroes and villains return in this unintentionally funny spy thriller that falls from grace and doesn’t land at all.
What happens when almost half the film is already shot in 2013. The rest 50% is just like patch work. That is what seems to have happened with this much awaited sequel that goes horribly wrong from the word go.
The film starts with a two-line recap of part 1 and tells you to see what happens next. What happens next is a constant back and forth of the story from the present to the past and back. A non-linear narrative, as they call it, seems great on paper but tricky to execute. Here it does little more than confusing the audience.
Kamal Hassan (RAW agent Wisam Kashmiri) and the rest of the cast reprise their roles from the original but the story doesn’t move forward at a thrilling pace. He goes on missions with two women – his partner Asmitha (Andrea Jeremiah) and wife (Pooja Kumar) in tow. This leaves him with pacifying the two squabbling women more times than solving terror attacks and saving lives. The conviction from the plot is missing just like in most of the characters that are poorly etched.
The attempted comedy between the two women is sad and the film’s villains are gross caricatures of the 90’s terrorists. On that count, Vishwaroop completely loses touch with today’s reality.
The only saving grace is Kamal Hassan and some of the action sequences that pack quite a punch. There is also an endearing Waheeda Rehman, beautiful as ever and her screen presence is surreal.
Musically, even with the Kathak backdrop of Kamal Hassan’s character there is no rousing dance number or any memorable soundtrack.
At over two and half hours, Vishwaroop 2 is a sequel that is marred by its flawed execution and exhausting length. It’s a Sadma for Hassan fans that will take time for recovery.
I am going with a generous 2 stars.
